Pokémon World Online
History
When the game had first launched back in December 27, 2007 - it was created and worked on by Kyro, alongside with childhood friend Zammbi. With the first beta release in early January 2008, the team saw their online game prosper. Within the first year, the game was getting nearly 500 connections per day. By the end of the second year, that number doubled. In the later stages of Pokemon World Online - Kyro had left in order to focus on his other projects including Pokemon Battle Arena and Monster Ranch. Zammbi had taken over as project manager.
On September 26th, 2011, the server experienced unexpected prolonged downtime, to which Godaddy (PWO's former server-hosting company) did not reply to initially, when inquired about the server issue. Subsequently, Kyro's paypal account was locked, prompting Zammbi to contemplate a new payment system for donations. In response to these events, the staff planned on integrating a new, cheaper server to host the game on, in addition to finding a new payment system to receive donations and fund the server, temporarily resorting to Zammbi receiving the donations on his account.
In January of 2011, the game was brought back online. However, it would be a short lived period of the game afterwards, a Cease and Desist letter was issued by Nintendo, to PWO's server host. Although Nintendo addressed the C&D order to the server host, ordering them to inform the PWO staff of the C&D letter, the PWO staff was not initially ordered directly by Nintendo to shut down the server. Therefore, they tried to keep the game online as much as possible, while in the process of discussing a concept for a new game that they wanted to revamp the project into.
Following the C&D order, on 23rd April 2011 it was announced that Pokemon World Online will start up once again alongside CodeCore Entertainment. With Zammbi inactive, Shane and Xanatus assumed the role of project leaders after reviving the project, who decided to host the server in Sweden, due to the copyright laws in the country that are suitable for PWO to be hosted in.
On July 18th, 2011, a newly appointed PWO developer, Zidonuke, began the deletion of PWO's data and server-side coding. Having held the position since July 14th, 2011, Zidonuke was faced with great criticism and opposition to his projects, most of which was generated in the IRC. Zidonuke, due to his growing frustration with the community, proposed a policy that stated that any member of the staff caught in the channel would be banned [1]. This was met with much opposition, and subsequently, Zidonuke revoked the statement. In a later attempt to put a stop to the rumors and ill-natured comments towards him, Zidonuke temporarily closed the channel. However, the channel was quickly reopened after the incident and, as a result of his actions, Zidonuke was banned from the channel. Despite being banned from the channel, Zidonuke continued to have a relationship with the channel and its users through other means.
It was this continued relationship that, most likely, continued to put a strain between Zidonuke and the community. A comprehensive log of continued contact between an admin of the channel, Zukiedo, and Zidonuke was posted on the forums shortly after Zidonuke logged into the accounts of Vetle, Zammbi, and Xanatus on the IRC network [2]. This action prompted Zidonuke to alter the contents of Zukiedo's thread and ban Zukiedo from the forum. This erupted into a full-scale channel event as several IRC users posted the log as a status update on the forums, after which the status was deleted and the user was banned. It was after this event that Zidonuke announced that he would delete the game and its database [3] [4]. Soon after, Zidonuke provided images of him moving the database off the server [5] [6]. In response to the actions that took place, crenel created a blog post about the incident, which discusses both Zidonuke's history and the future of Pokémon World Online.
The Game and Forums were restored and fully running by the 15th August 2011. Due to previous events, any user registered had to perform a password reset in order to be able to use PWO services again and a new site and forum theme were made live.
