Squirtle is one of six possible starters that a player may choose from when leaving Starters Island. To obtain a Squirtle as a starter Pokémon, it is necessary to start off in the Kanto region. Squirtle is a Water-type starter. At level 16, Squirtle evolves into Wartortle, which then evolves into Blastoise at level 36. With a base experience value of 66, Squirtle is tied for the highest base experience between any of the starters (with Totodile) and reaches level 100 at approximately 8.15 million experience.

Players who start out with Squirtle will not have much trouble with the first two gym leaders, as it is super-effective against Brock and balanced against Misty.
