Cinnabar Volcano Island is a reformed town, reconstructed from Cinnabar Island after the island was decimated by a volcanic eruption.

Although Cinnabar Island is cut off to the north and east by water routes, the Cinnabar Tunnel provides a bypass around Route 19, Route 20, and the Seafoam Islands (though not completely), allowing players without the Wind Surfboard to successfully navigate between Cinnabar Island and Fuchsia City.

Ferry

With a transportation ticket or actively usable train pass, players may ride the ferry to Cinnabar Island, if they have obtained the Volcano Badge. However, for those who have not previously visited Cinnabar Island and claimed the gym's badge, walking through the chain of tunnels (Seafoam Islands and the Cinnabar Tunnel) would be the only pathway here, without a surfboard.

For players without a surfboard, riding the ferry from Cinnabar Volcano Island to Pallet Town would be the fastest means of transportation, landing the closest to the next gym in Viridian City.

Science Lab

In Cinnabar Volcano Island's laboratory — more reputedly known as the Pokémon Lab in the handheld games — Pokémon fossils can be reanimated into a live form; the revived Pokémon depends on the archetype of the fossil required. The fossils are claimable primarily from Celadon City's Prize Corner, in exchange for vouchers—a prize-won currency from weekend-round events, hosted sporadically by the staff.

Cinnabar Volcano Gym

Cinnabar Volcano Island hosts the seventh Kanto-region badge, the Volcano Badge, in which Blaine presides over the gym. Reaching the gym requires a player to traverse through the volcanic pathway, which can be entered in the northeastermost cave entrance.

Thereupon defeating the gym, TM61 - Will-O-Wisp, in addition to an escape rope (particularly for Kanto starters), and TM61 will become purchasable in Goldenrod City Department Store.
